HW for Tuesday, 5/31

Finish "Three Cups of Tea" and write 200 word journal entry (journal 9).
For this entry, please consider the video that we will watch together in class today. We will discuss your thoughts about Mortenson and the controversy on Thursday (it will be a graded discussion!), and your homework for the weekend will also involve what is presented in this video. Do you think, given the good that Mortenson and his organization have, in fact, done, some of his indiscretions are excusable?

AND

IRP 6

What is your (detailed) plan for your independent reading project? How is it interactive? (200+ words).

HW for Thursday, 5/26

Read Chapters 20-21 and write a 200 word journal (journal 8).
What do you think about Mortenson's attempts to get into Afghanistan, despite the dangers of post 9/11?
John Krakauer (he wrote "Into the Wild", for those of you who were in my reading group last year) speaks very highly of Mortenson in chapter 20. Now, Krakauer is leading the accusations against Mortenson in a short e-book called "Three Cups of Deceit" (go here to read about it: http://www.amazon.com/Three-Cups-Deceit-Humanitarian-ebook/dp/B004XHVOW4). What are your thoughts about this turn of events?
We'll talk more about this in class next week, but start thinking about it now -- you'll be writing your own response to Krakauer!
